The bridge was made when there was the Roman city of Sellium , about 2000 years ago .
In Sellium, passed the main Roman road from our territory. From Lisbon ( Olisipo ) to Braga ( Bracara Augusta ), passed in Santarém ( Scalabis ) Conímbriga and Coimbra ( Aeminium ) . This road crossed the river in this bridge . Originally, this whole area consisted of farmland that Nabanis ( River Nabão ) irrigated .
From the Roman history, the city only keeps the bridge .
